A small business website from us starts at £475, an online shop at £1,500, and a redesign of an existing WordPress site at £375. What you’ll actually pay depends on how many pages you need, what the site has to do, and who writes the words.

What makes a website cost more?

Four things make the biggest difference:

  • How many pages you need. A five-page site for a local trade business is a very different job from a fifty-page site for a charity.
  • What the site has to do. Online bookings, ticket sales, members’ areas, directories and online shops all take extra design, building and testing.
  • Who writes the content. If you supply it, the price stays down. If you’d like us to write it, content writing starts at £500.
  • Moving an old site. Bringing pages, blog posts and images across from an old website takes time, especially from older systems like Joomla.

What will I pay after the website is built?

A website has a few running costs, which are easy to forget when you’re comparing quotes:

  • Hosting and your domain name. These are paid to your hosting company each year.
  • Maintenance. WordPress, its plugins and its themes need regular updates to stay secure and working. You can do this yourself, and we’ll show you how, or we can do it for you from £25 a month.
  • Online shop fees. Payment providers such as Stripe and PayPal take a small fee on each sale.

We’ll talk you through all of these before you commit, so there are no surprises.

Is a cheap website worth it?

Sometimes. If you need a simple online presence and you’re happy to build it yourself, a website builder with a monthly subscription can be a sensible start. The trade-offs come later: the monthly cost never stops, you’re tied to that company’s templates and features, and the work of writing, designing and updating it all falls to you.

A designed and built website costs more up front. It’s built around your business and your customers, it’s yours to keep, and it can grow with you. The right choice depends on what your website needs to do for you, and we’ll tell you honestly which makes more sense.

As a rule of thumb: if you just need a simple presence and you’re happy doing it yourself, a builder is fine. If the site needs to bring in work, a designed site usually pays for itself.

How long does a website take to build?

Most small business websites take two to four weeks, depending mostly on how quickly the words and photos are ready. Larger sites and online shops take longer, and we’ll give you a timescale with your quote.

Can I see a design before I pay anything?

Yes, if you’re a small business planning a brochure-style website. We’ll design your homepage free of charge, with no obligation, usually within two weeks. See the terms. If you like it, we’ll quote for the full site. If you don’t, there’s nothing to pay. Ask for your free homepage design.
